Baltimore Native Receives Nostrum Ecclesiam Tempus Award
Aston, PA—Sister Barbara Furst (formerly Sister Robert Catherine), OSF, a native of Baltimore, was recently awarded the Nostrum Ecclesiam Tempus Award (Our Time To Be Church) by the Diocese of Trenton. The award was inaugurated by Bishop John M. Smith to mark his tenth anniversary as Bishop of the Diocese of Trenton. Bishop Smith sees the award as a way of celebrating the women and men who have participated in an extraordinary way in the mission of the Church. The awards were presented on July 1 during a special evening prayer service at the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption.
Sister Barbara was born in Baltimore and grew up in St. Clement Parish in Rosedale. She graduated from Kenwood High School prior to her entrance into the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia in 1958. Sister Barbara’s years in ministry of education provide a life-long example of “being Church.” She was nominated for the award by the Office of Catholic School of the Diocese of Trenton.
Currently Sister Barbara is principal of the Sister Georgine Learning Center for Exceptional Children, a school founded by and named for Franciscan Sister Georgine Wohnhaas. Sister Barbara has played a vital role in the school’s development and growth since 1971. Under her guidance the school provides both intensive classroom work and, for older students, job training experience. In addition to her work with special education students, Sister Barbara also taught at St. Michael School in Hopewell, New Jersey, and at Immaculate Conception School in Trenton.
