Aston, PA—Sister Marie Moughan, OSF (formerly Sister Joachim Marie), 87, died in Assisi House on July 23. She had been a professed member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia for 63 years. Sister Marie was born in Philadelphia where she graduated from Hallahan High School and was a member of St. James Parish. Prior to her entrance into the congregation in 1945, she was an office worker for the U.S. Army Signal Corps in Philadelphia. She professed her first vows in 1948. Sister Marie earned a B.S. in Education from Villanova in 1961. She ministered primarily in education and in diocesan ministry.

Sister Marie ministered for 24 years in the Diocese of Trenton. She taught at Blessed Sacrament School (1947-1954), St. Raphael School (1954-1956), and St. Anthony School (1956-1961). From 1988-1992 she was executive secretary for the director for religious for the Diocese of Trenton. From 1992-1998 she worked at Morris Hall in Lawrenceville.

Sister Marie’s 18 years of ministry in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia include teaching at Hallahan High School (1967-1970). From 1981-1982 she was administrator of Our Lady of Angels Convent, the congregation’s motherhouse in Aston. She volunteered in the Business Office at Assisi House in Aston from 1998-2001. In 2001 she moved to Assisi House where she served in prayer ministry until her death.

Sister Marie’s ministry in the Diocese of Harrisburg included teaching at York Catholic High School (1961-1967). In the Diocese of Allentown she taught at Allentown Central Catholic High School (1970-1972). She served on the Diocesan Marriage Tribunal for the Diocese of Allentown from 1972-1977. She held a similar position in the Diocese of Newark from 1977-1981. From 1985-1986 Sister Marie spent part of the year working in parish ministry at St. Thomas More Parish in Pensacola, Florida, and part working at St. Mary Home in New Bedford, Massachusetts. From 1986-1988 she served on the diocesan tribunal in the Diocese of Metuchen.

All services will be held in Assisi House, 600 Red Hill Road, on Tuesday, August 2. A Christian Wake Service will be held at 9:30 A.M followed by viewing. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 A.M. Burial will be in Our Lady of Angels Cemetery in Aston. Sister Marie is survived by her sister, Marguerite Cantwell; many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and by her Franciscan family.
