Aston, PA—Sister Eleanor Cecilia Getz, OSF, 96, died in Assisi House on Sunday, July 12, 2026. She had been a professed member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia for 75 years. Sister Eleanor was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where she was a member of St. Malachy Parish and a graduate of Hallahan High School. She entered the congregation in 1949 and professed her first vows in 1951. She earned a BS in Education and an MS in Secondary Science, both from Villanova University. She ministered primarily in education and parish ministry.
Sister Eleanor served for 68 years in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. She taught at Nativity BVM School, Media; Little Flower High School, Philadelphia; and West Catholic High School, Philadelphia. She then served as coordinator for the Office of Eucharistic Renewal for one year. After that, she returned to teaching at Cardinal O’Hara High School in Springfield, where she spent more than a decade teaching religion. She then became a director of religious education for almost two decades, first at Nativity BVM Parish in Media, and then at All Saints Parish in Philadelphia. In 2011, Sister Eleanor moved to Assisi House, the congregation’s retirement residence in Aston, where she served in prayer and hospitality ministry until her death.
Additional ministry includes seven years in the Allentown Diocese teaching at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School in Minersville.
All services will be held in Assisi House on Friday, July 17, 2026, and will be livestreamed. A Christian Wake Service will be held at 9:30 A.M. followed by viewing. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 A.M. Burial will be in Our Lady of Angels Cemetery in Aston. Sister Eleanor Cecilia is survived by her many nieces and nephews and her Franciscan family.
