Aston, PA—Sister Elizabeth Doyle, OSF, (formerly Sister Elizabeth Joseph), 98, died in Assisi House on April 3, 2018. She had been a professed member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia for 77 years. Sister Elizabeth (Catherine Elizabeth Doyle) was born in Baltimore, Maryland, where she was a member of St. Elizabeth Parish and a graduate of Seton High School. She entered the congregation in 1939 and professed her first vows in 1941. Sister Elizabeth earned a B.S. in English from Mount St. Mary University in 1962 and an M.A. in Elementary Education from the Catholic University of America in 1972. She ministered primarily in education.

Sister Elizabeth began her many years in elementary education in the Archdiocese of Washington. She taught both at Our Lady of Lourdes School in Bethesda and at St. Bernadette School in Silver Spring.

During her 15 years in the Archdiocese of Baltimore, Sister Elizabeth taught at St. Anthony School and later served as both teacher and principal at Immaculate Conception School in Towson.

Sister Elizabeth spent many years in the south. In the Diocese of Raleigh she served as principal of Holy Spirit School in Jacksonville. She also ministered for 15 years in the Diocese of Pensacola/Tallahassee. She began as principal of St. Thomas More School in Warrington and later served as diocesan superintendent of schools for 12 years.  In later years she worked in the Archdiocese of Mobile, serving for five years as cafeteria manager at Most Pure Heart of Mary School in Mobile.

Sister Elizabeth spent another 15 years in the Diocese of Wilmington. She was principal of St. John the Beloved School and later served as a pastoral visitor at Our Lady of Fatima Parish in New Castle.

In 2010 Sister Elizabeth moved to Assisi House, the congregation’s retirement residence in Aston, Pennsylvania. She served there in prayer ministry until her death.

All services will be held in Assisi House, 600 Red Hill Road, Aston, Pennsylvania, 19014 on Wednesday, April 11. A Christian Wake Service will be held at 9:30 A.M. followed by viewing. Mass of Christian Burial at will be at 11 A.M. Burial will be in Our Lady of Angels Cemetery in Aston. Sister Elizabeth is survived by her brother, Lawrence Doyle, nieces and nephews, and by her Franciscan family. Donations in her name can be made to the Sisters of St. Francis Foundation, 609 S.
