Aston, PA — Sister Madeleine Francis Skrovanek, OSF, died in Assisi House on November 18. She was eighty-eight years of age and had been a professed member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia for sixty-seven years. Sister Madeleine Francis (Elizabeth Bridget Skrovanek) was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania, where she was a member of Sacred Heart Parish. Prior to her entrance into the congregation in 1938, she graduated from Allentown Central Catholic High School and worked in the office at National Greenbaum Bag Company. Sister Madeleine Francis earned a B.S. in Education from Villanova University and ministered in elementary school for a number of years, teaching grades 1-6. She later studied radiology at St. Francis Hospital School of Radiology in Trenton and worked for many years in healthcare. She was elected to the Catholic Health Association (CHA) X-Ray Committee from 1954-1959. She wrote the Standard Curriculum and Course Outlines for Two-year Schools of Radiology Technology which was published by CHA in 1959.

Sister Madeleine Francis ministered for twenty-three years in the Archdiocese of Baltimore. She taught at St. Peter Claver School in 1938. Most of her years of service were spent as radiology supervisor at St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson where she ministered from 1970-1975 and from 1987-2005.

Sister Madeleine Francis’ eighteen years of service in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia began with teaching at St. Ludwig School (1943-1946). She ministered as Administrative Director of Radiology at St. Mary Medical Center in Langhorne from 1975-1987. She moved to Assisi House in Aston in 2005 where she served in prayer ministry until her death.

Sister Madeleine Francis ministered for fifteen years in the Diocese of Trenton. From 1948-1951 she taught at Immaculate Conception School. From 1951-1955 she began her healthcare ministry at St. Francis Hospital. She returned there from 1959-1967 serving first as radiology supervisor and later ad Director of St. Francis Radiology School.

Sister Madeleine Francis’ seven years of ministry in the Diocese of Allentown included teaching at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School in Minersville (1939-1943). From 1956-1959 she served as radiology supervisor at St. Joseph Hospital in Reading.

Additional ministry experiences included teaching at St. Bonifacius School in New Haven, Connecticut (1946-1948), and working as radiology supervisor at St. Francis Hospital in Wilmington, Delaware (1967-1970).

All services will be held in Assisi House, 600 Red Hill Road, on Friday, November 23. A Christian Wake Service will be held at 9:30 A.M followed by viewing. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 A.M. Burial will be in Our Lady of Angels Cemetery in Aston. Sister Madeleine Francis is survived by her sister, Marie Seaman of Allentown; her brother, Otto Skrovanek of Allentown, nieces and nephews; and by her Franciscan family.
