Aston, PA: Sister Mary Francis Madaio, OSF, (93) died in Assisi House on December 31.  Sister Mary Francis (Genevieve Madaio) was born in Brooklyn, New York, where she was a member of St. Francis Paola Parish and a graduate of Eastern District High School. In 1945 she entered the Franciscan Sisters of Ringwood (a congregation that later merged with the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia). Her sister, Sister Catherine Madaio (now deceased), was also a Franciscan Sister of Ringwood. Sister Francis earned a BA in Elementary Education from Felician University. She ministered primarily in education and parish ministry.

Sister Mary Francis ministered for 38 years in the Diocese of Paterson. Eighteen of those years were at Mt. Carmel Parish and School in Passaic where she taught in the parish school, served as administrator of the CCD program, and did social work for the parish. She also taught at St. Francis School in Haskel and St. Nicholas School in Passaic. During her years at St. Anthony Parish in Passaic she taught CCD and did social work for the parish. In the late 1980s, she served as administrator of Mt. St. Joseph Convent in Ringwood.

During Sister Mary Francis’ 19 years in the Archdiocese of Newark, she taught at Assumption School in Emerson.

Sister Mary Francis also ministered for seven years in the Diocese of Brooklyn. She taught at both St. Francis Paola School and Holy Family School. During her time at St. Blaise Parish, she taught CCD and did social work for the parish.

When Sister Mary Francis moved to the Philadelphia Archdiocese, she lived at Our Lady of Angels Convent, the congregation’s motherhouse in Aston, where she engaged in local house ministry. In 2013 she moved to Assisi House, the congregation’s retirement residence, where she served in prayer ministry until her death.

All services will be held in Assisi House, 600 Red Hill Road, Aston, Pennsylvania, 19014 on Thursday, January 4. A Christian Wake Service will be held at 9:30 A.M. followed by viewing. Mass of Christian Burial at will be at 11 A.M. Burial will be held on January 5 in God’s Acre on the grounds of Mt. St. Francis in Ringwood, New Jersey. Sister Mary Francis is survived by her sister-in-law Kathy Madaio, nieces, nephews, and by her Franciscan family. Donations in her name can be made to the Sisters of St. Francis Foundation, 609 S.
