Statement on the Passing of our Beloved Pope Francis
The Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia mourn the passing of Pope Francis, whose leadership beautifully reflected the values of his namesake, St. Francis of Assisi. We have been deeply inspired by his compassionate guidance of the Church and the world.
Throughout his papacy, Pope Francis consistently prioritized the marginalized, listening with empathy to those in need and those on the margins of society. He maintained personal connections with suffering communities—among them, daily communication with a parish in Gaza. His vision of the Church as a “field hospital” focused on healing rather than judgment, echoing St. Francis’ ministry to lepers and outcasts.
Pope Francis embraced radical simplicity, modeling humility in both leadership and personal conduct. He built bridges across divisions, welcoming diverse voices and championing inclusion. His Synod on Synodality stands as a testament to his commitment to dialogue, listening, and shared discernment.
Given the Pope’s Jesuit background, his decision to take the name Francis was deeply symbolic. It reflected a Franciscan spirit that was clear in his deep love for creation and his commitment to standing with the poor. In Laudato Si’ and Fratelli Tutti, he reflected St. Francis’ reverence for all of creation, recognizing all people—and all of nature—as brothers and sisters.
Pope Francis used his voice to advocate, to challenge, and to encourage us all to share God’s love with a fragile and wounded world. His enduring legacy—through his encyclicals, apostolic exhortations, and the witness of his life—will continue to guide us in building God’s kingdom on earth.
We join the global community in offering prayers of gratitude for Pope Francis, a true follower of Christ in word and deed.
