Aston, PA—Sister Frances Marie Calhoun, OSF (formerly Sister Joseph Therese), 93, died in Riddle Memorial Hospital on June 29. She had been a professed member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia for 70 years and would have celebrated her 70^th jubilee this year. Sister Frances was born in Klamath Falls, Oregon, where she was a member of Sacred Heart Parish. She entered the congregation in 1947 and professed her first vows in 1950. Sister Frances earned a B.A. in Mathematics/Education from Marylhurst College in Portland, Oregon. Most of her years in ministry were spent in education.

Sister Frances ministered in the Archdiocese of Portland for 37 years. She taught at North Catholic High School, Central Catholic High School, Blessed Sacrament School, St. Mary Academy, Jesuit High School, and St. John Fisher School—all in Portland. She also served as coordinator of Corbet Mansion in Portland and, in later years, worked at Maryville Nursing Home in Beaverton.

During her 14 years in the Diocese of Baker, Sister Frances taught at Sacred Heart Academy in Klamath Falls, St. Joseph Academy in Pendleton, and St. Francis Academy in Baker. She also ministered for five years in the Archdiocese of Seattle where she taught at St. Leo School in Tacoma and at Holy Cross High School in Everett. She also worked at the Franciscan Administrative Center in Tacoma.

Additional years in ministry took Sister Frances to the Diocese of San Diego where she taught at Our Lady of Guadalupe School in San Diego and to the Diocese of Honolulu where she served as director of Aloha House.

In 2019 Sister Frances moved to Assisi House, the congregation’s retirement residence in Aston, Pennsylvania, where she served in prayer and hospitality ministry until her death.

All services will be held in Assisi House, 600 Red Hill Road, Aston, Pennsylvania, 19014 on Monday, July 6, and will be private. Burial will be in Our Lady of Angels Cemetery in Aston. Sister Frances is survived by her sister, Ruth Calhoun, her nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews, and by her Franciscan family.
