Advent 2025

Building Bridges of Hope: An Advent Journey

This Advent, we’re invited into the transformative practice of bridge-building through four intentional weeks: Listening to Yourself grounds us in honest self-awareness. Listening to God attunes us to the sacred presence that guides us. Listening to Understand stretches us toward genuine empathy for others, even those we disagree with. Building Bridges calls us into courageous action—invitation, vulnerability, and reconciliation.

Each week builds on the last, moving from inner work to divine connection to outward engagement. As we prepare for Emmanuel—God’s ultimate bridge to humanity—we learn to become bridge-builders ourselves, creating pathways of hope in a world that desperately needs connection.

Advent Calendar:  Daily action steps for Advent

Week 1: Listening to Yourself (Nov 30 – Dec 6) Download

Before we can build bridges to others, we must first understand the landscape of our own hearts. This week invites us into the practice of self-awareness—an essential preparation for authentic connection. We often rush past our own pain, fears, and longings in the busyness of life, but Advent calls us to slow down and pay attention.

As we engage these first seven days, we may discover walls we didn’t know we’d built, hopes we’ve buried, and wounds that still need tending. This is holy work. Just as an architect must survey the ground before building, we must know ourselves—our triggers, our stories, our places of resistance—before we can truly listen to others. Give yourself permission to be honest. The bridges we build from a place of self-knowledge are stronger and more sustainable than those constructed from pretense or denial.

Week 2: Listening to God (Dec 7 – Dec 13)  Download

Having turned inward to know ourselves, we now turn upward to listen for the One who knows us most deeply. This week centers us in the ancient practice of listening for God’s voice—not as a distant command from above, but as the intimate whisper of a presence that has been seeking us all along. In the noise and hurry of the season, this spiritual attentiveness requires intentionality and trust.

God speaks in many languages: through scripture and silence, through beauty and stillness, through gratitude and even through our unanswered questions. This week’s practices invite us to expand our awareness of how God might be reaching toward us. As you light candles, walk in wonder, and wait with expectation, remember that listening to God is less about hearing words and more about recognizing presence. You are learning to attune yourself to the sacred, to notice the divine fingerprints on ordinary moments. This spiritual grounding prepares us to see others as God sees them—as beloved children worthy of our attention and care.

Week 3: Listening to Understand (Dec 14 – Dec 20) Download

Now the journey moves outward. Grounded in self-awareness and sustained by spiritual practice, we are ready to practice the difficult and transformative work of truly listening to others. This week challenges our natural tendencies to defend, correct, or immediately respond. Instead, we practice the radical act of listening to understand—not to win, fix, or even necessarily agree, but to genuinely see another person’s humanity.

These seven days will likely stretch us. It’s uncomfortable to sit with perspectives that differ from our own, to resist the urge to plan our rebuttal while someone else is speaking, or to assume good intent when we’ve been hurt. Yet this is where bridges begin—in the vulnerable space of choosing curiosity over certainty and empathy over judgment. You may find that when you stop trying to be understood and start trying to understand, something shifts. Common ground appears where you expected only division. The person you disagree with becomes a person with a story, with fears and hopes not unlike your own. This doesn’t mean boundaries disappear or truth becomes relative—it means we’re learning to hold our convictions alongside genuine compassion for those who see differently.

Week 4: Building Bridges (Dec 21 – Dec 24)  Download

The final days before Christmas call us from listening into action. Everything we’ve practiced—knowing ourselves, listening to God, understanding others—now becomes the foundation for actually building bridges. This is the week of courageous love, where we take the risks that connection requires: inviting, truth-telling, reconciling, celebrating.

These actions may feel daunting. Extending an invitation means risking rejection. Speaking truth in love means being vulnerable. Seeking reconciliation means acknowledging where we’ve contributed to distance or harm. Yet this is the heart of the Advent message—God took the ultimate risk to bridge the chasm between heaven and earth, entering our mess and fragility as a vulnerable infant. Emmanuel, God-with-us, is the bridge-builder par excellence. As you move through these final days, you’re not building bridges in your own strength alone but joining in the reconciling work that God has been doing since the beginning. Let Christmas Eve be a celebration not just of Christ’s coming, but of how this Advent journey has changed you—softened you, stretched you, and perhaps given you the courage to reach across one divide you never thought you could cross.
